xxx Taken in cities including Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, and Mexico City, "Soft Cities" treats architecture and street scenes as if they're fleeting, ghostly impressions. Rather than the "hard city" of buildings and concrete, the images represent the dreamlike consciousness of the viewer. This imaginary city intermingles inhabitant and city, identities and desires. There are illusions of scale and many-layered reflections. A piece of lace and a glance through a window, a statue's offhand gesture and a translucent row of building-fronts all contribute to this sense of displacement. The city is what one makes of it, and vice versa. Printed in mixed tonalities, the photographs emulate a familiar romanticism, but the center is missing. Instead of portraying landmarks, the fragments allow viewers to assemble their own version of the city.
