Digitally-based color images, "Momentary Monuments" attempts to capture transitory moments in public and transform them into something more timeless. Many of the photographs are extended frames, comprised of diptychs and triptychs, that depict fragments of torsos and gestures. Packed tightly together, these fragments suggest hidden stories and private interactions. Other images reveal individuals caught in a strong sidelight, lifted out of the context of the street. They seem like witnesses, immersed in an unfolding drama. Their gestures and colorful fabrics are reminiscent of religious figures in Italian Rennaisance art. Shot on the streets
with a palm-sized camera, often without looking through the
lens, the photos are digitally enhanced to bring out their
found meanings. I like how the everyday, rough-edged quality
is changed into something more painterly. |
