BIO

In 2007 Gary Duehr was chosen as a Best Emerging Artist in New England by the International Association of Art Critics. In 2003 Duehr received an Artist Grant in photography from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, and his work has been featured in museums and galleries including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, MA; Exit Art, Umbrella Arts, and New York Arts, New York, NY; Gallery Tsubaki, Tokyo, Japan; SKC Gallery, Belgrade, Yugoslavia; and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana, Cuba. Past awards include grants from the LEF Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

His public artworks include a photo installation funded by the Visible Republic program of New England Foundation for the Arts, and a commission from the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority) for a permanent photo installation at North Station.

Duehr has written about the arts for journals including ArtScope, Art New England, Art on Paper, Communication Arts, Frieze, and Public Culture. Currently he manages Bromfield Gallery in Boston's South End.

Hazards of Modern Living, Boston Harbor Shipyard, 2010-2012.
Fabricated from aluminum to simulate industrial warning signs, "Hazards of Modern Living" comments on the culture of fear in the post-9/11 era.

OceanSky Ladder, Boynton, FL, 2010-2011.
A site-specific installation, this photo-sculpture recreates the vibrant color scale of the Florida Coast—from gritty beach to azure sky—in glossy photo panels framed by an aluminum ladder

TALK WALK LISTEN, public interventions in New York and New England, ongoing.
Comprised of 4"x4" trompe l'oel aluminum plates, TALK encourages (demands?) that passersby engage in conversation, listen politely, and walk briskly when required.

Currents, North Station, Boston, MA, 2005 (permanent installation).
Commissioned by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority, Currents is a series of 200 photo-panels of harbor scenes, in sepia on aluminum, which animate when viewed from a passing bus.

What Is the Point?, Harbor Point, Boston, MA, 2005.
100 signs erected in clusters throughout the Point, featuring visuals and poems by Point residents, created in community workshops. Sponsored by UMass Boston.

ARTS FIRST, Harvard University, Boston, MA, 2005-2009.
Site-specific, interactive installations for Harvard's spring arts festival, created in collaboration with students in a public art course.
